Using Nature to Repel Nature?

You bet!

Summertime is upon us and this means longer, sunnier days often spent outside. There are two things I’m not a fan of in the summer, heat and bugs. Unfortunately, enjoying the outdoors means you have to put up with a certain amount of both! Luckily, aromatherapy can help us with the bug issue. Let’s talk about essential oils that help repel bugs.

Mosquito on a leaf; Pasithea's Bug-Off Bug Spray

The biggest culprit really is mosquitos. Did you know mosquitos are considered the most dangerous creature on Earth? This is because they spread so many bad diseases through their bites. Yikes. Even if we’re not concerned about the spread of disease, getting a mosquito bite at all is beyond annoying. If you’re like me and slightly allergic then you know that those bites are gonna swell up and be super itchy. There are lots of bug sprays out there to help, but unfortunately some of them use harmful chemicals like Deet to repel the bugs. Essential oils offer us an effective and safer alternative. Here are some of my favorites:

Patchouli:

Hippie, Motorhome, field, Bug off-spray from Pasithea's Garden

Beloved by hippies and outdoorsy-types, patchouli has that sensuous, grounding scent. Turns out it’s great for repelling not only mosquitos but can help with flies and gnats as well. Excellent!

Cedarwood:

The sweaters in grandma’s cedar trunk don’t worry about getting pestered by bugs, and for good reason. Cedarwood is helpful for chasing away a large variety of bugs including ants, bees, wasps, chiggers, fleas, flies, gnats, lice(!), mosquitos, spiders, AND ticks. Gee, let’s just coat ourselves in Cedarwood oil every time we go outside! See - Using Nature to repel nature!

Vetiver:

Vetiver is distilled from the roots of grassy plants. Guess what? Those plants don’t get bit by mosquitos and neither will you if you wear Vetiver essential oil. Vetiver has a beautiful, dark, rich, and earthy scent. It honestly kind of smells like dirt but in a glamorous way. Fancy dirt. It’s awesome and I don’t think you’ll mind smelling like it at all since the mosquitos will be totally avoiding you.

Lavender:

Oh Lavender how do we love you? Let us count the ways… This oil is so awesome and versatile. You could really just wear lavender oil all the time and reap so many benefits. You’d

Lavender Fields, Sunny field, mountains and using essential oils to repel bugs

smell great, feel calm, and be bug free. Lavender helps to repel ants, chiggers, fleas, flies, lice, mosquitos, spiders, and ticks. If Lavender and Cedarwood got together and formed a gang they could rule the world!

These are just a few of the essential oils that have bug repelling properties. Coincidentally, these are the oils we put into every bottle of Pasithea’s Garden Bug-Off! All Natural Bug Spray. We love them for their help in chasing away insects and they also smell amazing together. I’ve had people tell me they wear it as their summertime perfume!

Check back with us soon, in our next blog we’ll go over some more bug fighting oils and how to use them.
